State of Origin: QLD Roads vs NSW Roads

With the State of Origin in full swing, we thought it’d be fun to take a look at Queensland roads versus New South Wales roads.

We have split the competition into three distinct categories of road length, the weather these roads have to suffer through and the actual condition of roads in each state. So let’s get started.

1. Road length

When we talk about road length, the state with longest roads is considered the winner. This is because to be able to brave long roads requires endurance and patience. When taking a look at these roads there is one simple rule. The roads themselves must run exclusively in the one respective state. The results were as follows.

Queensland had four roads that extended over 1000km in length each. These four were:

  • Bruce Highway
  • Diamantina Development Road
  • Burke Development Road
  • Landsborough Highway

NSW, on the other hand, unfortunately did not have one road that reached the 1000km length. So the roads in NSW that contended were:

Seriously, there weren’t any that came close.

2. Weather

A road that doesn’t survive rain, floods, hail storms, blistering sun and cold temperatures really doesn’t deserve to be considered a road. What we can say without a shadow of a doubt is that both and Queensland and NSW have had to face these types of conditions in equal measure.

Be it the Queensland floods of 2011 or the floods that hit NSW earlier this year, both states have shown their roads can withstand the odds and so can their people. For weather, it is therefore a tie.

3. Road conditions

So who will win? Will Queensland win best roads and walk away victorious? Or will NSW win this category and cause a tie? Well, to avoid dragging it out, New South Wales wins this category as easily as Queensland won the road length category.

When perusing online forums, talking to family and friends and asking for impressions from others, the overwhelming consensus was that NSW roads are simply smoother and less likely to make your coffee go flying everywhere.

Looks like we’ve reached an impasse. Queensland and NSW are tied when it comes to our roads. But that’s the point. Really, only State of Origin can decide the superior state.
