Summer produce guide: January

2015 is upon us, and so is the second month of Summer. So let’s take a look at what produce is currently in season for January.

As the heat and humidity stays, no doubt you may utilise any of the following to make some delicious chilled drinks or refreshing salads. So, let’s get to it and look what’s in season for January.

Fruits

A whole bunch of different berries are in season during January, so why not have a berry smoothie of your choosing? Of course, berries are versatile, so you can also enjoy them on their own, with ice cream, custard, and so on. Or throw them into a fruit salad some of the other fruits listed below. Suffice to say, you’ve certainly got a wide range of fruits to choose from in January.

Vegetables

On the vegetable front, those that are in-season aren’t as plentiful. However, just because there aren’t as many choices doesn’t mean you’ll be stuck for options. From asparagus, capsicum and cucumbers to potatoes, zucchini and peas, there’s still plenty at your disposal – certainly enough to go into a roast meal or stew if you still want a hearty meal in the summer months. Of course, with air conditioning, any season is a great season for a roast meal, right?

  • Asparagus
  • Beans; particularly Green, Flat, and Butter

  • Celery
  • Cucumbers
  • Eggplant
  • Lettuce
